Very interesting article. I agree with the opening... first the "Gospel" of Judas, then the "tombs". For some reason it really gets a rise out of the average person, without them actually realizing its just a flimsy attempt to discredit the Bible. Particularly, I found your site while trying to research the monad, or Illuminati dot within a circle. Interesting how it goes to the Pythagoreans, is found in Masonry, and also can find roots in the Egyptian diety of Ra.

Salam Jalan! I lived in Malaysia for a few years. Actually, I saw an excellent blog on this topic coming from Indonesia a few years ago. The websie nailed this material but I could not read it as it was in bahasa. I have only a cursory understanding. Remember, not all you see in America is Christian. In fact, I would argue that it is not a Chrisitan country. Salam

I realize the thread had gone cold, but I have something to add to the discussion.

I appreciated your use of ellipses when quoting Magnum Opus; I rushed to read what you had left out. Following your lead, I will also paraphrase:

"... the bread and wine teach us that our Mortal Body is no more WE than the house in which we live, or the garments that we wear; but the Soul is I, the one, identical, unchangeable, immortal emanation from the Deity, to return to God and be forever happy, in His good time; as our mortal bodies, dissolving, return to the elements from which they came, their particles coming and going ever in perpetual genesis."

Leaving this section out leads one to the conclusion that Masons are taught that the soul is nothing more than a sort of "force" they dissolve into when their body dies. In fact, before a man can become a Mason he must affirm his belief in the immortality of the soul.

More importantly, earlier in the degree, is written:

"Masonically we know not whether you be Christian, Jew or Moslem. We have no right to ask. If you be Christian, you will see in this...a Christian ceremony; and so you have the right to regard and interpret it: Your Brethren will respect your faith, as they have a right to demand that you shall respect theirs."

The eucharist is presented as a symbol worthy of refection. Not as a sacrament. The Scottish Rite contemplates many such symbols in multiple historical and religious contexts, of which, its newest members may not have been previously aware. By examining the relationships among similar religious symbolism of other faiths, whether extant or extinct, a Scottish Rite Mason is better enabled to understand his own religious beliefs. It's no secret that Jesus wasn't the only one who claimed to be the Son of God or that Chrisitanity doesn't hold the patent on the eucharist.

Masonry does not require anyone to change their beliefs. It does ask that one respect the beliefs of others. This poses a stumbling block for

Actually, there may be issues with the groups you have mentioned. I am not involved in any of them, and I probably would not be for the possible reasons you have mentioned. However, I am not as concerned with an organization having secrets, but rather oaths and secrets that are of a violent nature, as Adams suggests. I know that the 1st degree of Freemasonry asks a recruit to swear to keep secrets of which their nature is an unknown. I agree with Adams....are the vows so majestic, so awe-inspiring in themselves...that the violence espouced in them cannot be removed? Why can't they be removed? Why are they so precious? I know the words, and the violence is not needed.
